Neurofunctional Acupuncture

What is Neurofunctional Acupuncture?
Neurofunctional acupuncture (also known as Contemporary Medical Acupuncture) is an advanced neuro-modulation technique.  Instead of focusing on traditional energy meridians, it targets the body’s peripheral and central nervous systems.  By pinpointing exact nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, it prompts the body’s natural healing mechanisms to relieve pain and improve movement.
Our Integrated Needling Approach:
To deliver the most comprehensive care, our neurofunctional approach seamlessly integrates Dry Needling and Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) techniques:
  • Neurofunctional Acupuncture: Targets specific nerve pathways and motor points to regulate the nervous system and block pain signals.
  • Dry Needling / IMS: Specifically targets deep intramuscular myofascial trigger points (painful knots).  This process induces a brief local twitch response to instantly release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and restore normal range of motion.
How It Works:
  • Detailed Assessment:  The process begins with a functional movement and neurological assessment to identify the root cause of the dysfunction.
  • Targeted Needling:  Fine, sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into anatomically defined sites to interact with specific nerves and motor points.
  • Electrical Neuromodulation:  Gentle electrical currents are often applied to the needles to enhance stimulation. This process up-regulates or down-regulates cellular processes to block pain signals and reset overactive nervous systems.
Performance Optimization:
Neurofunctional acupuncture is not just for injury recovery, it is a powerful tool for athletic performance and functional optimization.  By directly stimulating the nervous system, this treatment:
  • Restores Neuromuscular Drive:  Reconnects and “wakes up” inhibited muscles that are not firing efficiently.
  • Enhances Power and Coordination:  Maximizes muscle recruitment patterns for greater strength and fluid movement.
  • Accelerates Recovery:  Boosts localized blood flow and cellular repair to reduce post-training soreness and downtime
What to Expect During a Session:
The treatment is highly tolerable.  When the needle and electrical current hit the target nerve or muscle, you may feel a mild, localized ache, a slight muscle twitch, or a gentle tingling sensation. Most patients feel deeply relaxed during and after their treatment.
What We Treat:
This evidence-informed approach is highly effective for both acute injuries and chronic conditions:
  • Chronic and acute pain (including back and neck pain)
  • Sports injuries and movement dysfunctions
  • Headaches and stress-related disorders
  • Nerve entrapments and muscle imbalances
